You cannot own a digital photograph

Pop Quiz:  When was the last time you printed images from your smartphone?

The silence I'm hearing is deafening!  There are many services that are springing up to handle this need and I can't stress strongly enough that you should get some of those priceless images printed.

A few tips that may help:

1   Pick only the best version of any one image.  12 tiny differences in a pose do not mean something is worth keeping.  Pick the most flattering version and move forward.  Remember, the biggest reason we are inundated with images is that we have more of them than we will ever have the time to appreciate; do your future self a favor and save time.

2   Print 20% of the images.  The silence is gone now and I'm hearing groans of frustration...  but, its not that hard!  The trick is to be yourself 10, 20 or 30 years from now.  At each of these timeframes, ask yourself how any given image will be viewed that was that old.  Would they be useless?  Would they be interesting?  Would they tell a story?  There is your criteria; if they aren't even interesting, easy to skip...  if they tell a story, I can tell you that image falls into the 'priceless' category.

3   Get a second opinion.  Go through the images with another family member.  You will be amazed at how the different viewpoint will clarify your thinking.

Food for thought...

You cannot own a digital image.

Sounds crazy doesn't it?  It's not.  A digital image is a file.  A file by definition must live on some type of electronic device.  In order to view a digital image file, you must use a device, and this is where the impossibility of ownership comes into play.  You are totally at the mercy of both a hardware and a software manufacturer to be allowed to view your image.  Software versions will change, as well as hardware.  Licenses will expire, hard drives will fail, electricity will go out, the list is endless.  The bottom line is, if a device is required to view your file (image), it isn't really yours because it can be taken away from you legally any number of ways!

Print is a tried and true form of historical preservation and requires no device other than your eyes to enjoy for the rest of your life.
